Collaborations
The interconnection of the Eugenides Foundation Library with other libraries, institutions and organizations
Collaboration between the Eugenides Foundation Library and the Hellenic Naval Academy
In October 2013, during a small ceremony held at the Eugenides Foundation, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Hellenic Naval Academy and the Eugenides Foundation, confirming the intention of both institutions to collaborate and interconnect their libraries.
The purpose of the Memorandum was to upgrade the infrastructure and services provided by both libraries in the context of their common mission: to produce, transmit and disseminate knowledge about science and technology.
On the basis of this agreement, since October 2013 and every year, Information literacy seminars have been organized at the Eugenides Foundation Library for the training of naval cadets.
The cadets, by attending these seminars, receive experiential training in library use and appropriate ways of searching, locating, evaluating and using print and digital resources for the preparation of the assignments they have undertaken during the academic year. Emphasis is placed on the use of electronic resources (repositories, databases, e-journals) and on the implementation of scientific work using bibliography. The printed material selected by the cadets is provided for loan by the Library.
The cooperation with the Hellenic Naval Academy was extended since 2023, with the inclusion of the fourth-year cadet midshipmen of the Hellenic Coast Guard Academy in the programme of educational - academic visits.

Maritime Libraries Network [MarLiNet]
During 2018, the foundations were laid for the establishment of a new thematic network of libraries in Greece. This network includes the majority of organized maritime collections held by specialized and university libraries: the Maritime Libraries Network [MarLiNet].
The process for creating this network began in 2011, when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Eugenides Foundation Library, the Aikaterini Laskaridis Library and the University of the Aegean Library. The Memorandum reflected the intention of the three institutions to collaborate in their collections related to shipping and maritime issues in general, as well as their commitment to integrate more libraries into the network.
Today, besides the above three libraries, the libraries of the following institutions have been integrated into the network:
National Technical University of Athens
Naval Museum of Greece
Hellenic Naval Academy
University of Piraeus
Naval History Department
Hellenic Institute of Naval Technology
Hellenic Naval War College (HNWC)
These libraries hold significant collections on shipping and share a common vision of improving their services towards researchers and readers (users) from the general public. Representatives of the libraries meet monthly in order to coordinate their actions in the network towards fulfilling the following main objectives:
- Expand the availability of titles to their users.
- Save resources through a rationalized strategy of new acquisitions.
- Increase the readability of their maritime collections.
- Maximize their visibility as important collectors of books and material on maritime transport issues (a step in that direction has already been taken through the new design of a common website, which can be found here).
Collaboration between the Libraries of the Eugenides Foundation and the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP)
The Eugenides Foundation Library has long-standing collaborations with many other libraries, especially those in the wider area of the Foundation.
In this context, special mention is made here of the cooperation with the Library of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP), given the common subject categories of the libraries in the areas of Science and Technology. This collaboration resulted in an innovative action, concerning the programme of podcast recordings, titled: Scientists who “Eurikan” for humanity.
The implementation of the podcasts (narration, recording, music) is carried out by the Centre for the Study and Dissemination of Myths and Folktales.
More information AND the podcasts can be found HERE.
Union Catalogues
The Eugenides Foundation Library is a member of the National Network of Science and Technology Libraries of the National Hellenic Research Foundation and has participated in the National Union Catalogue of Scientific Journals [ESKEP] of the Greek Science and Technology Libraries from the beginning of its creation.
ESKEP presents the bibliographical data of printed and digital scientific journals found in the collections of Greek libraries and for each journal title presents the libraries’ holdings.
Since 2008 the EF Library has also been participating in the Union Catalog of Hellenic Academic Libraries.
Organizing Committee for the Support of Libraries (Synergasia)
Since 2012, the Eugenides Foundation Library has been a member of the Organizing Committee for the Support of Libraries, which consists of representatives from Greek and international organizations. The Committee’s objective is to contribute to the modernization of Greek libraries and information centres so as to improve the quality of services they provide to their readers/users. The Committee, which was established in 2003, is a model of balanced and equitable representation and cooperation of its constituent bodies.
The Committee organizes international conferences, workshops, panel discussions and lectures to present the latest developments in information technology and libraries with a program of professionals that derive from library and information science from several countries.
It consists of the following institutions: Goethe-Institut Athen, Athens American Center, Cervantes Institute of Athens, Nordic Library at Athens, British School at Athens, Association of Greek Librarians and Information Scientists, National Library of Greece, Library of the Hellenic Parliament, National Documentation Centre [EKT], Music Library of Greece "Lilian Voudouri", Philadelphia - New Chalkidona Public Library, Diavazontas Megalono, General Council for Libraries, Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, Eugenides Foundation.
